"PELE's
VOYAGE FROM THE ANCIENT HOMELAND"
by Herb Kawainui Kane
This
beautiful painting depicts Pele on her great voyage to Hawai`i,
carrying her sister Hi`iaka (patron Goddess of the hula) and guided
by her brother Kamohoali`i in the form of a great shark (mano).
The wonderful saga of Pele and Hi`iaka is one of the most well-known
in Hawai`i and one of the greatest of all time. It has generated
many hundreds of chants, songs and poems.

"PLANTER"
by Herb Kawainui Kane
This is an image of a Hawaiian planter, or mahi`ai.
He is holding a hardwood digging stick and a "wetland"
taro plant (grown in shallow, walled ponds called lo`i
where there is abundant rainfall). Other major plants shown
are ipu (gourds), bananas (mai`a), breadfruit
(`ulu), sweet potatoes (`uala), sugar cane and
coconut trees. Hawaiians were incredible agriculturists; their
cultivation of plants was the most sophisti- cated of all of Polynesia.
They grew 230 varieties of sweet potato - how many kinds do you
see in your supermarket today?
